Porthcawl Omnibus Company Ltd - Book (2026)

PORTHCAWL OMNIBUS COMPANY LTD.

The convoluted history of the Porthcawl Omnibus Company undertaking cannot be told without reference to the dozens of ‘owner driver’ vehicle operations that invaded the streets of Porthcawl, during the early twentieth century.

As time passed, most of those operators fell by the wayside, and after the World War 2 hostilities were over, the majority of remaining one-man, one-vehicle operations formed a consortium to amalgamate their interests, and in 1947, registered a company known as Porthcawl Omnibus Company Ltd.

The syndicate eventually took over their last two competitors, and moderately expanded the business with extra local services, tours, and private hire.

However, the company became very run down in the late 1950s, and was absorbed by E.P. John, the proprietor of Kenfig Motors, at nearby Kenfig Hill. The Porthcawl OC. licences and title were retained, and the business operated in tandem with Kenfig Motors Ltd. for 18 years, until the retirement of its proprietor E.P. John in 1977.

Upon Mr John’s retirement, the Porthcawl Omnibus Co. undertaking was sold to an established Porthcawl omnibus proprietor, John Williams, who again retained the Porthcawl Omnibus Co. licences and title, and operated the business in tandem with his own company, John Williams Coaches.

At the same time, Kenfig Motors Ltd., passed to established operator Mansel David & Son, of Pontycymmer, who later fully absorbed Kenfig Motors, and retreated to Pontycymmer.

Mansel David then became involved with Waterhall Coaches, at Kenfig Hill, who later fell by the wayside, and were absorbed by a syndicate involving Mansel David’s son, trading as Movereturn Ltd., Pontycymmer.

John Williams expanded the Porthcawl OC. operations tremendously after deregulation, but sold off his local service network to First Bus subsidiary, A.E. & F.R. Brewer Ltd. in 1996, and finally ceased operating in 2001.

For completeness, all of Porthcawl Omnibus Company’s ‘Predecessors, Constituents and Associates’, are recorded in this publication.
